1. Familiarize yourself with the different wood choices. While there are perfectly fine softwoods used in furniture construction, upper end furniture should have all the exposed parts made of hardwood, or a softwood with a good quality hardwood veneer. Most good furniture is a combination of soft and hard wood.
Some Good Hardwoods;
Oak
Teak
Mahogany (except Philipine mahogany)
Walnut
Cherry
Rosewood
Good Soft woods;
Pine , (has attractive, durable knots)
Cedar
Spruce
2. If you're going to be using your dining room table quite a bit, you should probably get a hardwood table.
3. The table should be finished on all sides because exposed wood will absorb moisture unevenly and cause warping.
4. A composite wood with a veneer is a poor choice unless the piece is not getting much use.
5. Look at the wood sideways to check for types of bonding used. You can usually see an open piece of the complete board underneath the piece of furniture. Ask someone in the store to lift it for you to inspect. You want to see if it is real wood and not just a composite.
6. Use the piece of furniture while it is still in the store. Sit on chairs, rock the rockers, and slide open the drawers of bureaus and desks. Make sure all the parts work well.
7. . Run your hands over the wood to feel the Finish. Well crafted furniture has a nice smooth finish. Don't trust your eyes, run your hands across the table and make sure there are no imperfections.
