German Celebration of Ostern

In Germany there are several fun traditions.

Osterfeuer
(Easter Fire)

This is a celebration in Germany held on Saturday before Easter that varies in style, depending on where you are.

Debris is burned and sometimes old Christmas trees , (Tannenbaum) to clean out the old and have a clean start for the Spring, sort of a purification ritual.

The celebration dates back to pagan times when making sacrifices was a way to bring blessings of the gods.

Like most of our celebrations the religious leaders altered them to have religious significance.

The Children play a game called Chocolate kiss

Chocolate Kiss is played with chocolate-covered marshmallows. The object of the game is to gobble up marshmallows without allowing others to smear your face with the chocolate. The winner is the person who can eat the most chocolate marshmallows with the cleanest face.

Of Course they have Easter egg hunts as well..

Recipes from a German Grandma

When Grandma took a notion to bake a ham, she used generous amounts of Grandpa’s homemade wine to baste it with while it was cooking. The spicy aroma of the ham, wine, cloves, and brown sugar baking in the oven left no doubt about what was for dinner! In the old days, she’d buy a real smoked ham, with the bone in and skin on. After having the skin taken off, it was boiled to get some of the salt out of the meat, then covered with brown sugar and cloves, and baked in wine. Those hams were truly memorable!
Chef Stephen discusses hams, then gives his own recipe:

“The old-fashioned gourmet hams are cold-smoked and cured, sometimes for up to 6 years. Most of the hams on the market today are not cured at all. They are injected with water and liquid smoke. They taste okay to me, though the flavor is sort of like jellied lunch meat, compared with the taste of a real cured ham, which has a chewy but tender texture and a mellow, lingering smoky flavor that keeps getting better with each bite. These hams are difficult to find, but can be ordered.

Pork fat does not necessarily rule...

Hams now can be fairly low in calories or fat.
My wife is doing very well with weight loss(over 120 lbs now)
and is enjoying lo calorie but high flavor foods.
See which hams she recommends

Take care

Kitchen Tool Review

Choosing a Good Blender
What goes into a good blender. Cook's Illustrated did a review recently and found several things are important. One is blades that are positioned at different angles not just 2 blades up and 2 blades down but more irregular like Joshua singing and dancing. Also it helps if several of these blades are serrated. Good blades are determined in part by how well they can crush ice.
Also a blender should have a V shaped container which keeps the product close to the blades.

For United States

KALORIK
This is not a household company name but Cook's Illustrated felt when they did research that our of over 15 blenders this was the best buy.

Brinker Pretzels
Delicious Pretzels made in Germany and shipped to the US deep frozen.

I really have enjoyed the Brinker products.
I thought about Bavarian Brezel this week when one of the readers, Harry C. told me he is developing a pretzel that tastes more like Germany's maybe for the US market. I hope he does!!
Meanwhile I highly recommend ordering these from the Germandeli.com.
Just give them a call to order they are very very friendly, and have over 5000, German products.
If you want just email me or call and I will order for you if you want or direct you.
