1790's Schweizer Steak Recipe, Shine your Shoes for Nikolaus Day, Dec 6th, and Make your own Springerle

Christmas Gift Books Package

Nikolaustag

St Nikolaus Day Dec. 6th

I hope all is well. Now it is time to get into the holiday baking. I am excited my sister gave me grandma's century old nut grinder for the cookies. My dad says is does a whole lot better job than a food processor, that chops up nuts un- evenly. I look forward to the old fashioned hand tools sometimes.

I came across a recipe that originated in 1790 and redone in Scharfenberg's book the Cuisines of Germany and Roy Denman taught me that it would be called a German Style Schweizer Steak or Swiss Steak as we would call it here in the states.

My friends from this site have told me about Nikolaustag or St Nikolaus Day which happens on Dec. 6th in Germany. It is gaining more popularity in the states in places but is still unknown to most of us German - Americans. I am sure going to shine my shoes for the event !

Springerle is one of the most unique of all the German Christmas cookies my grandma would make. I suggest getting an early start as I often have to make several batches if one doesn't turn out right. The rewards are fantastic. My kids want the tradition carried on!

St Nikolaustag
St. Nikolaus Day Dec. 6th
celebration in Germany

In Germany, 6 December is an important day for children. On the evening of 5 December, children place a boot or shoe outside their bedroom doors, hoping that Nikolaus will fill it with presents and candy.

Sometimes someone dressed as St. Nikolaus comes to the door to inquire about the behavior of the children.

Lasst uns froh und munter sein
Und uns in dem Herrn erfreu'n!

Bald ist Nikolausabend da!
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Dann stell ich den Teller auf,
Niklaus legt gewiß was drauf,
Lustig, lustig, tralera-lera,
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Wenn ich schlaf, dann träume ich:
Jetzt bringt Niklaus was für mich.
Lustig, lustig, tralera-lera,
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Wenn ich aufgestanden bin,
Lauf ich schnell zum Teller hin.
Lustig, lustig, tralera-lera,
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!
Bald ist Nikolausabend da!

Niklaus ist ein guter Mann,
Dem man nicht g'nug danken kann.
