Do you have a German Name?

How did German  folks get their names?

Christa's Goulasch
with Kartoffel Knödel

Christa Writes ...
My mom used to make this in her Restaurant in Germany.
..it was more beef , onions and broth like...brown Soupy kind of thing, but it was spicy...the Hungarian Paprika was spicy...if you can't find Hungarian Paprika you could use red Pepper. Everyone loved that soup and you had to eat bread with it....my Dad worked with a Hungarian and he came and showed her how to make it.

Here is the recipe for Christa's Goulash and Kartoffel Knodel (potato dumplings)

Christa writes that she will sometimes make the Kartoffel Knödel from a nice
"Ready to Cook" Maggi product

They are really COOL to see appear like magic
when you cook them in their special pouches.
Sort of like a magic trick.
They come out perfectly round.
See it happen here

available at GermanDeli.com, order it here

Julius Maggi
Read more about this German pioneer
I suppose I usually think that when I see a
product like, "Maggi" that it is some big
company that is just into making money.

Julius Maggi wanted to make money
but he was also concerned about getting
an inexpensive nourishing meat soup
available to the poor working class that
couldn't afford meat at that time.

I appreciate more now these products
and especially cause a German did it.
We rock!

Geschnetzelte Chicken

We don't seem to show a lot of German Chicken Recipes
in fact do you know what Chicken is in German?
one word for chicken is Hühn...
Could be where we get the name ..Hen from.
This is a nice recipe that is simple chicken sauted
with a simple mustard sauce. Great for a quick dinner.

Recipe Requests

. Maybe you can help with a couple recipes--Kartaeusser Klose [sp?] and Rodon Kuchen. I hope I'm close! Grew up on them, but can't find recipes. Best wishes,

Helmut

Lilo would like to know if you have a recipe for green bean soup that calls for buttermilk?

Thank you! Patricia Baldwin

Hey Stephen ! Thanks for all your best recipes. I enjoy all of them... I would like to ask you if you have a recipe for a "German Farmer Soup". Many years ago, I tasted that soup in a Restaurant in Ogunquit ( Maine ). After a day at the beach, my friends and I, used to go for a German Farmer Soup every day. I will always remember that wonderful taste. That soup was made with beans, tasting the ham and the onions... Hummm. Hummmm. I would love if you have a soup like that. It also had carrots in tiny pieces. Thank you for your answer.

I am still looking for a recipe for Gewurz Kuchen. My mother made it with cocoa powder. It is my sister's favorite and I would love to surprise her with it. The Internet has some variations, but I am not recognizing the one my Mom made.

Thank you!
