What is Goetta? Goetta, a German dish, is often compared to
breakfast sausage or scrapple.  It is pork or a blend of
beef and pork , Whole grains, mostly Steelcut (pinhead oats) and sometimes barley.
and seasonings.

It is most often served grilled like a sausage patty for breakfast.

Where did it originate?
Goetta originated around the Cincinatti, Ohio area at the time that
many NorthernGerman's settled there prior to the 1900's

Where did the name Goetta come from?
Goetta most likely comes from the root word in the low German dialect
(Plattduutsk).. götte the High German term is grütze meaning peeled grain
and the " r" is often swallowed when pronounced In the English language.
In English we say "groats", but when those of German heritage spoke it sounded like Geta
They made this sausage like food, with oats "groats" and, simmered with the shredded meat of pork necks and spices and so it became known as Goetta.Groats is the same root word for grits. Another distinction is that in Germany they would have made this from Buckwheat as they didn't grow oats much. In the states we had a good supply of oats but not so much Buckwheat.

When is the Goettafest?

In the Greater Cincinnati area, there have been annual celebrations since 2004 with the central theme of Goetta .

The "Original" Goettafest is an annual cultural and culinary celebration held in Covington, Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. Covington has a rich heritage of German immigrants and this festival is held in MainStrasse Village, an area of Covington a few blocks from the Ohio River. In 2006 this celebration was held June 17 and 18. It also includes a small German based Renaissance festival across the street from the main Goettafest.

Glier's Goettafest is a similar event held at the Newport, Kentucky Levee on the Ohio River. The festival celebrates both the dish and Greater Cincinnati's German American heritage. While the main focus of the festival is goetta, it also typically includes music, dancing, and other public entertainment. In 2006 the festival was held August 4th through 6th.

No specific festival celebrating Goetta is actually held in Cincinnati.

When Robert Carl Glier (* 1848 Untersachsenberg + 1927 Cincinnati), son of a wind instrument maker in Klingenthal /Saxony, came to America in the nineteenth century he brought with himself few material things. The family had a long tradition of fine craftsmanship, developed through hundreds of years as musical instrument makers. The following report shows, that the grandson, Robert Ralph Glier, was more for the practical things.
