What is in the name Bean ? The "green" is obvious
The root word Bean which meant something of small value is from Northern Europe, with different variations, like Bohne from Germany, Boon from Dutch, Bene Olde English Baun from Iceland, while down south the latin word was Faba, where Fava bean comes from.
The Spanish used the word Frijole that came from Latin and Greek word Phaseolus which meant a skiff or small boat. Well a bean pod does sort of look like a little ship. O.E. bean "bean, pea, legume," from P.Gmc. *bauno (cf. O.N. baun, Ger. bohne), perhaps from a PIE reduplicated base *bha-bha- and related to L. faba "bean." As a metaphor for "something of small value" What family of plants does the green bean come from?
The green bean comes from a group callled Phaseolus Vulgaris, the word vulgar originly meant, the common people not bad language. So it means the common bean. The same specie as lima beans, black beans and pinto beans. How is a green bean different ?
The Green bean is different because you eat it before it is mature and you eat the pod and young seeds. Not all bean pods are edible.
They were not so edible until Calvin Keeney bred out the string from the green bean and made it much more edible.
