Get Your Retro On!
On 3 x 5 Monday I posted a Recipe for an old favorite,
Sausage Rice Casserole

This simple dish has an interesting history.
In the 50's there was a dish called RICE-A-RONI,
Do you remember the Jingle
"Rice A Roni, The San Francisco Treat"
It really popularized rice in the United states where
the popular boxed side dish was Macaroni and cheese.
Like our Sausage Rice casserole it was a blend of rice and noodles.
This comes from an Armenian recipe called Armenian Rice Pilaf
. Where in the heck is Armenia?
It borders Turkey to the East and other Middle Eastern countries.
About 1920 there were many Armenians that came to America to escape
mass killings in their country.
An Armenian family with a grandma that made the best Armenian Rice Pilaf ended
up rooming with
a family that worked for their father's pasta business named
"Golden Grain". They brought home the pasta for the rice dish from work and thought
that this would be great in a box like Kraft Mac and Cheese.
A great success story of Immigration.
Our family decided to add the sausasge to this dish and
here is our recipe
Sausage Rice Casserole
